Sustainable Kirtlington was set up in the autumn of 2007, stimulated by contact with the Oxfordshire ClimateXchange network (part of the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford). The network seeks to bring groups such as ours together in order to support and inspire one another. Our group grew out of such encounters with like-minded individuals and groups. First steps The first year of SK's programme was broadly informative: we put on a series of meetings, with films and panel discussions of issues such as 'peak oil' and decentralised energy. The year culminated in a ‘Footprint Fair’, which, in addition to traditional village fete attractions, included various awareness-raising stalls and activities. The profits from the fair were used for the implementation of energy-saving measures in the village hall.
